The American Legion Auxilary (ALA) is a community of volunteers that serve Veterans, Military, and their families. Each year the ALA sponsors an essay writing contest for students in grades 3-12, including students with special needs. The word count requirement varies between grades. Grade levels are divided into six classes. One award will be presented.

The Sons of The American Legion (SAL), created in 1932, is an organized program within The American Legion. It is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the United States military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion. Each year, more than 4,000 high school students from across the country participate in the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. You must submit an 800 - to 1200 - word essay discussing an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated with the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. My upbringing in 4-H, Boy Scouts, and family has instilled a strong feeling of patriotism for my country and my flag.
